Former Highveld Lions captain Neil McKenzie is appointed as the batting consultant for the Proteas.

McKenzie will begin his duties in the upcoming T20 international series against Australia. He will be available for the ICC World T20 in India which starts in March, and his position will be assessed after that.

Proteas head coach, Russell Domingo, was delighted with the appointment of McKenzie after a lengthy search for the ideal candidate. “It’s great to have him on board,” said Domingo.

“It’s been something that we have been trying to do for a long time. We have explored a few options and finally one guy has committed to us, we are ecstatic that Neil will be joining us.”

McKenzie said he was honoured to be given the opportunity and hoped his playing experience would give him the tools to make a difference. “It’s a tremendous honour to be aiding in the batting side of things. It’s nice to be back in the setup, I haven’t been here since 2009,” he said.

“It’s a good bunch of exciting players and I’m really keen to get started with all the professionals and to hopefully try and make a difference for South Africa.”

The 40-year-old has been playing in the Maters Championship League in Dubai where he represented Virgo Super Kings. He played in 58 Tests, 64 ODIs, 155 domestic T20s and scored a mammoth 19 041 first class runs.
