The 22nd St John’s College Easter Rugby Festival was yet again host to some exciting schoolboy rugby.

Schools from all over the country participated including a team from Zimbabwe and one from Australia.

Head of rugby coaching at St John’s Kevin Musikanth said the festival was a showcase of the best junior rugby in the country.

Event director Adrian Norris said the success of the festival lay with the schools which participated. “We have schools from all over the country. We try to invite schools with the same caliber and ethos, and all the boys fulfill the principles and values [of the festival]. It is good competition.”

Some of the highlights included St John’s College playing festival newcomers Eye of the Tiger College, with the home side run away

57–10 victors.

The game of the festival was undoubtedly the nail-biter between Hoërksool Florida and Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool from Pretoria. Centre Zach Briel was the standout for Affies when he scored two tries within seven minutes. But with Florida ahead and 90 seconds on the clock, it was Affies fullback Heinrich Bisschoff who broke Florida hearts with a well-worked try and a 28–24 victory for the boys from Pretoria.

Paul Roos Gimnasium from Stellenbosch bagged nine tries on their way to a 61–12 victory over Parktown Boys’ High. Star Paul Roos fly-half Colia Louis added 14 points with his boot.

Hilton College provided a much sterner test for St John’s. The hosts were 21 points down after just 18 minutes but two tries from Julian Zille either side of half time and some rock solid kicking from Kieran Houlston almost got St John’s back into the fray but the Maritzburg lads held on 28–19.
