Armed robber takes aim at victim but shoots accomplice dead instead

After closing his spaza shop in Hillbrow at about 8pm on 17 October and carrying an undisclosed amount of cash, the shop owner walked across the road with two friends to the block of flats he resides in on the corner of Edith Cavell and Esselen streets.

The three men went up to the fourth floor and, upon opening the door of the spaza owner’s flat, they were approached by three suspects. One suspect was in possession of a firearm.

Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo of Hillbrow police said, “The one suspect grabbed the man who owns the spaza shop and stood behind him, demanding the money.”

A struggle then ensued. The armed suspect fired a shot at the victim, grazing the spaza shop owner’s ear but hitting the suspect’s accomplice instead. The accomplice died on the scene.

Zondo added that the other two suspects fled the scene without the money.

The spaza owner was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

Hillbrow police are on the lookout for the two suspects.
