#RIPKarabo: ‘Karabo was a gentle soul’

A work colleague has described slain Karabo Mokoena as a ‘gentle soul’ with a passion for abused women and children and added that she will forever be missed.

Mokoena, originally from Soweto, went missing on 28 April and her body was found the next day. She was allegedly killed by her boyfriend.

Her charred remains were discovered on 29 April in a shallow grave in the veld next to Whitney Road and Corlett Drive next to Whitney Gardens in Lyndhurst.

Cheryl Hlabane, a manager at Frida Hartley, a shelter for destitute women and children in Hillbrow where Mokoena volunteered, said they are saddened by the news of Mokoena’s passing.

Hlabane said everyone is devastated and added that they are left with questions as to why Karabo had to go like this. “She had a pure heart and a very gentle soul,” said a distraught Hlabane.

“You could hear when she spoke that it comes from a place of love, passion, compassion and empathy, that’s how she was. Karabo’s passing is one of the lowest blows for our organisation because we all loved her.”

She said Mokoena was still young and wanted to make a difference in the lives of women and children at the centre. “She also wanted to establish her own organisation that deals with issues affecting women and children. She was good with that and had an open relationship with all our women here and children as well,” she said, adding that she was like a sister to them.

Details surrounding Mokoena’s death are still unclear‚ however, a man who is believed to be her boyfriend has been arrested and has been charged with her murder.

Captain Mohlaume Mamabolo, spokesperson for the Sandringham Police Station said to the North Eastern Tribune, “The suspect has been arrested and he is charged with murder. He is expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 12 May,” said Mamabolo.

Details: Sandringham Police Station 011 719 4844.
