3 rob man in car in Newtown

A man in his 30s was at the receiving end of a terrible ordeal when he was held in vice grip and robbed while sitting stationary at a red traffic light in his white Hyundai vehicle in Newtown, Joburg at about 10pm on 10 May.

It is alleged that three suspects approached the 33-year-old man as he waited at a red traffic light at the intersection of Carr and Quinn streets in Newtown. “The three suspects approached him and broke the window of his car,” Joburg Central Police Station spokesperson, captain Xoli Mbele told the publication. “One of the suspects choked him while his accomplices took his laptop, cellphone and a bag containing his clothes before fleeing the scene.”

Following his ordeal, however, the victim opened a case and took the police to the scene of the incident where one of the suspects is said to have lingered. “The victim pointed out one of the suspects, a 24-year-old man, who was apprehended and placed in police custody,” added Mbele.

“Two suspects are, however, still at large with the victim’s belongings. Police have launched an investigation while the suspect awaits making an appearance at the Joburg Magistrates’ Court soon.”
