The 27-year-old was arrested on 10 May for allegedly murdering his ex-girlfriend Karabo Mokoena at his luxury Sandton Skype apartment after a fight.

Mokoena went missing on 28 April and her charred body was discovered in a shallow grave in Lyndhurst on 29 April.

Family and friends of the deceased had posted on social media requesting assistance about Mokoena’s whereabouts and only found out on 10 May that she had been murdered and burned beyond recognition, allegedly by Mantsoe.

The accused appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 12 May and the case was postponed to 24 May for a bail application.

He will be charged with premeditated murder and defeating the ends of justice and was remanded in the Norwood police cells.

Tshivhase said when a rumour of Mantsoe’s escape plans started doing the rounds they were forced to keep a close eye on him.

“When we started hearing about his escape plan we had no choice but to restrict his visits,” said Tshivhase.

“We have also cut down on his visitors and only one person is able to visit him because we fear what could happen.”

He added that Mantsoe’s case was officially being handled by the Sandringham Police Station but because there were no prison cells there, they had to hold the accused in Norwood.

On social media sites there were also rumours that Mantsoe was planning to commit suicide but Tshivashe said it would be difficult as they were keeping a close eye on him.
