VIDEO: EFF loot stock during no confidence march

EFF members march through the streets of Johannesburg singing struggle songs.

Update: 3.30pm

Stun guns and rubber bullets were used by the police in the Joburg CBD to block the EFF march to the offices of Gauteng Premier David Mabuza on 8 August.

This happened shortly after EFF provincial and regional leaders, Solly Mkhize and Musa Novela, urged members to march peacefully.

The police tried to block the march, citing that it was illegal. They opened fire to disperse the marchers who were meeting in Joubert Park. Some of the marchers were injured and taken to nearby hospitals to receive medical treatment.

However this did not deter the marchers who said they will march to Mabuza’s office as planned.

Novela, addressed the gathering after the shooting incident and said the march will go ahead. He said they should not be stopped by the stun guns and rubber bullets. “We applied for this march to go ahead with the Metro police and they granted us permission. Public order police had no right to stop us and even shoot at us,” said Novela.

Members stood their ground and clapped hands in support of the call when Novela said: “We will not back down.”

Initial story: 3pm

Economic Freedom Fighters members descended on the Joburg CBD on August 8 and disrupted traffic ahead of the members of parliament voting later in a secret ballot in #noconfidencemotion against President Jacob Zuma.

Fighters, as they are affectionately known, sang struggle songs, looted stock from informal traders and burnt tyres as the march moved towards Joubert Park.

A scuffle broke out with a few members of the party and the police, but it was quickly contained and marchers continued to the park.
