Arrested for shooting at cops

Hillbrow police arrested three suspects for shooting at the police and two other suspects for cellphone robbery in the Joburg CBD.

Three suspects were arrested by the Hillbrow police for allegedly shooting at the officers during a high-speed chase.

According to Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, spokesperson for the Hillbrow Police Station, the suspects were charged with attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“On Saturday, 19 August, the police were on patrol in Yeoville when they noticed a suspicious vehicle with three occupants. When they tried to stop it, the suspects sped away and a chase ensued with suspects shooting at the police, however, the police subsequently cornered them next to Joubert Park,” said Zondo.

“Luckily no one was injured and all three suspects were arrested and have appeared before the Joburg Regional Court on 22 August.” The suspects were remanded in custody.

Zondo added that a preliminary investigation revealed that the firearm was registered in KwaZulu-Natal. He said the firearm has been taken for ballistic testing to ascertain if it is linked to other crimes. Further investigations are underway.

In a separate incident, Hillbrow police reported that two suspects were arrested on 22 August for a robbery that took place in Faraday Street, outside the taxi rank. Apparently, the taxi was stationary at the traffic lights when the suspects snatched a cellphone through a window.

“The victim was in the taxi talking on her cellphone when the suspects snatched the phone at an intersection outside the Faraday Taxi Rank. The police, who were nearby, chased the suspects who entered a nearby building, and finally arrested them,” said Zondo.

The two have been charged with robbery and will appear in court soon.

This type of crime is rife in the Joburg CBD, and Zondo said they have identified various hotspots which police continue to monitor. “However, we also urge motorists and taxi commuters to exercise caution whenever they use their cellphones in vehicles,” He concluded.
