ATTENTION MOTORISTS: New car robbery method, please be vigilant

Spokesperson for the Bramley Police Station Captain Molefe Mogodi.

The Bramley police are calling upon the local community to remain vigilant when leaving their cars at malls or bank parking bays due to criminals targeting goods in parked vehicles.

The spokesperson for the station, Captain Molefe Mogodi said, “These thieves would walk slowly as if they are innocent shoppers. Once they have spotted their target, they do not hesitate to pounce on it. We, at Bramley police, do make sure that we serve our community with pride by providing them with safety tips. We would encourage the community to take care when parking their cars at parking bays of malls or banks.”

Mogodi added that while the infamous carjamming device is still in use, criminals are devising newer plans to attack the community.

He said that the complex method involves criminals targeting cars with one driver inside. The suspect will open the left rear door, slightly and will walk away leaving no evidence or suspicion. The driver will lock their car, thinking that the left rear door is locked.

Mogodi said that a second suspect will arrive and open the left rear door and steal whatever is inside the vehicle. They will then close the door and in doing so, lock the car.

Commuters should do the following:

  • Close and lock the doors of the car while still standing there
  • Test the driver’s door to check whether it is indeed locked by pulling open the door handle
  • Should it open while performing the above, you should know that one or more doors are not locked
  • Walk around the vehicle, open and close all the doors and repeat the same exercise to ensure the car is locked.
