Truck with stock worth about R2 million hijacked in Houghton

Suspects are sought by police for allegedly hijacking a truck with loads of audio visual equipment.

A truck with a load of goods was allegedly hijacked on 29 August in Houghton by criminals posing as police officers.

According to Norwood police, the incident took place on 1st Avenue.

The truck was carrying sound systems as well as television sets.

The police said all the equipment, including the truck, are estimated to be worth R1 948 924.

Spokesperson for Norwood Police Station, Captain Elliot Tshivhase said the suspects were driving a white BMW fitted with blue lights.

Tshivhase said the driver of the truck was ordered to stop on the side of the road.

“Not realising that it was not the real police, the driver stopped to find out what the problem was. To his surprise, one of the suspects [allegedly] pointed a firearm at him and shouted. He ordered the truck driver to get into their car,” said Tshivhase.

“The other two truck occupants were also ordered to jump out of the truck and were ordered to get inside the suspects’ car and told to bow their heads down while one of the suspects drove the truck.”

The truck drove in a southerly direction along Louis Botha Avenue.

“They were later dropped off in an open veld nearby in Norwood and were let go without being injured.

“The police are investigating a case of truck hijacking.”

Tshivhase urged anyone who might have information which could lead to the suspects’ arrest to contact the police.
