Engen Pitch and Polish will name the final winner of the competition

Mntu Nduvane, group corporate social investment and stakeholder engagement manager of corporate affairs at Engen Petroleum, presents the R6000 cash prize to Joburg Engen Pitch & Polish entrepreneurial competition winner, Masego Mohajane.

The national Engen Pitch & Polish entrepreneurial competition winner is expected to be announced on 30 November at Melrose Arch in Joburg.

Now in its eighth year, the competition has already helped approximately 10 000 entrepreneurs to improve the way they present their business ideas to potential funders, said project manager for the event, Bronwyn Echardt from Raizcorp.

Engen Pitch & Polish has collaborated with Engen Petroleum, Nedbank and Raizcorp, and has also partnered with two major media houses, SAfm and Caxton Local Media.

The platform is designed to give local entrepreneurs the opportunity to have their ideas brainstormed, tested and challenged.

Through the course, entrepreneurs receive valuable feedback and insights and also win cash prizes.

On 9 September, Masego Mohajane, founder of M-Squared Medical, a company based in Midrand, was named this year’s Joburg regional Engen Pitch & Polish entrepreneurial competition winner in Braamfontein.

The young entrepreneur walked away with a cash prize of R6 000 after presenting her business to a panel of judges and beating more than 400 other entrepreneurs who were vying for the prize.

The format of the competition includes both a workshop and competition element said Raizcorp in a statement issued on 7 October.

“It is a lateral-thinking national business competition, exposing would-be entrepreneurs to entrepreneurial training and thinking, helping entrepreneurs turn their business or business ideas into a success. It is a unique platform and searches for the wonderful hidden entrepreneurial gems in South Africa,” said the statement.

“The prime objective for Pitch & Polish is to help entrepreneurs in towns and cities across South Africa polish their business pitch.”

Participants take part in a free pre-registered day-long competition-based workshop, and on the day, contestants ‘pitch’ their business idea to the audience while a facilitator gives tips and guidance, helped by the audience, to “polish” the pitch until the contestants have a professional and in-depth presentation.

The event culminates in the contestants giving their final three-minute pitch which in turn will give them an advantage to scoop the biggest prize in the competition.
