Jeppe police arrest two Bertrams men for rape

The South African police recorded a total of 39 828 rapes in 2016/17, down from 41 503 in 2015/16. An average of 109.1 rapes were recorded each day according to crime stats released by Police Minister, Fikile Mbalula in October.

Two men were arrested by Jeppe police on 4 and 7 November and both face serious charges of rape.

The incidents took place in separate areas where one of the victims was allegedly promised a job.

According to Jeppe police, a 25-year-old victim alleged that she received an SMS from the suspect inviting her to come to his place for a job opportunity.

Upon arrival, Jeppe police spokesperson, Captain Richard Munyai said the suspect welcomed her into his house in Derby Road in Bertrams, making her believe that he wanted to take her details.

“He started to touch her and squeeze her breasts but she told him to stop,” said Munyai.

“The suspect pushed her onto the bed and forcibly removed her underwear, He raped her without using a condom. After the incident, he begged her not to report him to the police and promised to get her a job.”

Munyai said the victim proceeded to the Jeppe Police Station and reported the case, adding that the suspect was immediately arrested on 7 November and charged with rape.

In a separate incident, Munyai said a 23-year-old woman was allegedly raped in Gordon Street also in Bertrams.

The victim alleges that on 4 November, she visited her aunt, who was with her male friends, drinking alcohol.

“Later on, the victim told her aunt that she wanted to sleep and her aunt told her to go and sleep at one of the friends’ places,” said Munyai.

“One of the men, who was drinking with [her aunt], allegedly followed her when she went to sleep and removed her clothes while she was sleeping. He forced himself on the victim, while she passed out.”

Munyai explained that the victim was awakened by a noise coming from people who were assaulting the suspect, as they apparently caught him in the act. They then called the police and he was then arrested.

A case of rape was opened; the suspect was charged and immediately detained at the police station.
