Bail hearing for building hijack accused

Johannesburg Magistrates' Court.

The Executive Mayor of the city of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba attended the bail hearing of Jonathan Constable who is accused of property hijacking in Rosettenville, south of Johannesburg.

On the first day of his hearing at the Joburg Magistrates’ Court, a confident Constable was questioned about the issue and firmly denied the allegations.

Constable, who works in the anti-corruption unit at a union known as National Immigrants Council of South Africa (NICSA), said that he was investigating the ownership of two properties in Rosettenville. This allegedly after complaints by members of the council who live on one property in Marble Street.

Constable claimed that during his alleged investigation of the title deeds, he discovered that the landlord, referred to in court as ‘Madam Grace’, did not have the necessary supporting documentation, making them invalid. He said that he advised members of NICSA living in the building not pay rent to her.

It is also claimed that they removed the Eskom meter box valued at about R7 000.

In his questioning of Constable, public prosecutor Kobus Ehlers asked whether the NICSA membership fees paid by tenants of the property were being pocketed by Constable, who said the accusation will be denied ‘with the contempt it deserves’.

He added that the accusations against him were orchestrated by the City and police, claiming that he and his members have video footage of police taking bribes.

Constable applied for bail alongside his two co-accused. His reasoning was to avoid being blacklisted by being able to keep up with various financial commitments.

This is a developing story and updates will follow.
