Situation normalised at the Norwood police barracks

The situation has been normalised at the Norwood police barracks after residents took to the streets demanding water and electricity be restored after six weeks of non-supply.

Water and electricity have been restored at the Norwood police barracks but residents are, however, worried about a lack of other basic services.

Replying to the questions posed to her by the North Eastern Tribune, community leader, Sharon Mtshali, confirmed that the situation has been normalised.

“Yes, water and electricity were restored on 19 December 2017 but we don’t know if this will never happen again,” said Mtshali.

“Residents are happy that it was sorted although it looks like it will be a temporary fix until a new circuit has been bought.”

Residents are worried about security, waste collection and lifts that are not working in their 10-story building even though they say they pay rent.

Mtshali said they are complaining about a lot of issues adding that there is a need for serious action to be taken to fix their living conditions.

“Residents are complaining because the lifts are still not working even though we have raised the concern in our meetings.

“They’ve hired someone to clean the building but still needs a lot of work to be done. The sub-contractors have installed windows although they’ve not yet completed due to the festive season,” she said.

“We need to have access control on both buildings and it’s not safe because no one is patrolling and that’s why we have a lot of theft happening in these buildings.”

Last year residents had to go without water and electricity for about six weeks due to an alleged stolen electricity circuit breaker.

Norwood Police Station commander, Colonel Anna Jojisa confirmed that it has been replaced and the water supply was also restored.
