St Mary’s School’s Ikusasa Lethu programme has the future of Alex pupils at heart

On most Saturday mornings during each school year, Grade 10s, 11s and 12s of five high schools in Alexandra and surrounding communities attend a school programme, Ikusasa Lethu Programme (our future), at St Mary’s School, Waverley.

The programme is aimed at enhancing the education of the schoolchildren and to assist them to access tertiary education. The children are taught mathematics, physical sciences, life sciences, accountancy, geography and English by highly qualified and experienced teachers.

According to Kathy Mittendorf, the head of marketing at St Mary’s School, the programme has so far supported more than 3 500 children over the years. She said the Class of 2017 had 94 matriculants who achieved a 98 per cent pass rate with 61 distinctions and 80 per cent bachelor degree passes.

Fifty-five boys and girls of this group are now enrolled to study at universities and colleges in South Africa. Disebo Mapole and Ayabulela Pinana were the outstanding achievers of the group and both achieved five distinctions.
