Gauteng Provincial police officers among the 1 900 suspects arrested

Gauteng provincial police arrested about 1 900 suspects, while three police officers were arrested for various crimes.

Spokesperson for Gauteng provincial police, Captain Mavela Masondo said, “Gauteng police mean business when they say they will get rid of criminal elements within the ranks, as seen with the arrest of police officers accused of various crimes over the weekend.”

A police constable was arrested in Sandringham for attempted business robbery, misuse of state vehicle and defeating the ends of justice.
“It is alleged that the constable colluded with three suspects to rob a business in Linbro Park. The constable allegedly used the state vehicle to transport the criminals.”

Thorough investigation by police led to the arrest of the constable and his two accomplices.
“In a separate incident, a Khutsong constable and five others were arrested for extortion and for allegedly kidnapping a 36-year-old foreign national in Potchefstroom.”

The six were arrested and the victim rescued following the swift response by police to an alleged attack on a family member who had delivered the ransom fee in the West Rand.
Police also arrested a 40-year-old police constable in Protea Glen in Soweto for corruption, extortion and fraud.

Masondo said that in their effort to ensure the realisation of reducing crime to an all-time low, Gauteng provincial police have been out on the streets and arrested more than 1 900 suspects over the weekend for various crimes
“Furthermore, 348 suspects were arrested in Ekurhuleni for crimes ranging from rape, housebreaking, possession of suspected stolen vehicle, possession of dagga, driving under the influence of alcohol and assault.”

More police officers were deployed in Johannesburg to conduct various operations and combat serious and violent crime. These operations led to the arrest of 391 suspects for crimes ranging from business robberies, assault, fraud, domestic violence, possession of drugs, armed robbery, possession of stolen motor vehicle and possession of unlicensed firearms.
