Teaching the wonders of chess

Chess organisation Goforchess has begun this year’s league and is looking to help the game grow and reach as many schools as possible.

The organisation’s league officially started on 27 February at the Saheti School and on 20 February at Grayston Preparatory School. Goforchess has grown exponentially with its primary goal of teaching younger children about chess while giving them the platform to compete and is closely affiliated with the Johannesburg Metro Chess Union and Chess South Africa.

The organisation has been running for eight years and is primarily made up of coaches who believe that the importance of competition is good for the development of chess and feed the pupil’s potential love for chess.

Goforchess Arbiter Eric Mpathi said the organisation runs two leagues – one at Saheti School and another at Grayston Preparatory. Schools near those venues can compete in the league. Both leagues play concurrently every Tuesday and the winners of the respective leagues will compete against each other for the Goforchess league overall.

Founder of the Goforchess, Clyde Wolpe, said the beauty of the league lies in the fact that private and government schools are all brought together and children from various backgrounds come together.

The organisation will be hosting an Introduction to Chess tournament on 25 March at Bryanston Sports Club with entry at R250 per player.
