Residents donate blood to help save lives

Adele Engelbrecht, a resident of Orchards donates blood at 24 Carrots' blood drive initiative.

Twenty-four Carrots, a creative company based in Orchards, held its first-ever Blood Donation Drive as part of their social responsibility programme to help save lives of those in need.

About 40 people from parts of the Johannesburg north-east suburbs including companies heeded the call and donated blood.

According to the organiser, Buhle Ndaba, they had a consistent inflow of donors throughout the day (10 April) with volunteers donating blood.

Ndaba said they had staff from the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) administering the process.

She said even though the blood drive did not attract as many people as the company desired, they can only hope the next one will be better.

“We can only hope that our blood drives will gain popularity and momentum throughout the year,” said Ndaba.

“We believe there’s always room for improvement and a greater outreach. We have had upwards of 40 people taking time out of their busy schedules to donate some blood.”

The company is organising three other blood drives on 4 July, 3 September and 31 October.

Ndaba said as a social responsibility to our community, we thought this would be the best way a company like ours could make a difference in the lives of others.

She said each blood drive will have a different experience.

“A different theme and feel for each blood drive will ensure that each time is a unique experience for donors.

“What is exciting for our initial drive is that we had all our staff also participating and we had about six staff contributing to the blood drive,” she said.

The company has encouraged more people to donate blood and Ndaba said every time you donate blood you are saving three lives and giving blood to those in desperate need.

This also serves as a networking opportunity for the company and Ndaba said they would love to meet and interact with members of their community.
