The City of Johannesburg’s water utility, Joburg Water saw thousands of litres of drinkable water going to waste in the late hours of 10 April affecting water supply to most parts of the inner city.

This was due to the 900mm water pipe burst at the corner of Curry Street and Sivewright Avenue in Doornfontein, a stone’s throw from the Emirates Park Stadium. Traffic on the busy Sivewright Avenue had to be diverted to other routes as a result of engulfing floods on the road which left motorist frustrated and in total despair.

It took three hours for the utility’s technician’s first team to arrive at the scene who could not solve the problem claiming that it was beyond their capacity.

According to Johannesburg Metro Police who were on the scene, the matter was reported to the utility as early as 3pm.

“It’s 6:30pm now, we reported this incident to Joburg Water at around 3pm and they promised to dispatch the team of technicians but until now we haven’t seen them.”

Talking to the North Eastern Tribune one of the team members said,”This problem is beyond our capacity. We cannot risk our lives, we can’t take chances with this. If something happens to us the City will not be responsible, this water is dangerous.

“Problems of this nature are usually caused by the ageing infrastructure of the city.”

It took the team of technicians the entire Tuesday night to fix the problem.
