Africrest, City accused of colluding on Bramley’s housing project

The debacle surrounding the Africrest Properties’ housing development in Bramley is not over yet with residents and the developers pointing fingers in different directions.

Bramley Against Africrest Project founder Martini Katja accuses Africrest’s co-founder Grant Friedman of lies and buying the rights of the building project along High Road.

As reported in the North Eastern Tribune, Week ending 29 June, both the City of Johannesburg and Friedman claimed that all due processes were followed in the rezoning and development procedures for the four-storey housing project.

Katja is, however, convinced that this is not true and even accused both parties of colluding to ensure the project goes ahead, even though residents object to it.

The Tribune has interviewed all parties concerned, the City, Friedman and Katja on behalf of the residents, but it is still unclear who is lying and who is telling the truth.

In his response to the Tribune’s published article, Friedman claimed that all due processes, including building plan applications, rezoning and development procedures were followed. He said that Katja is the one who blocked the consultation processes by refusing to meet with them and the residents.

Katja has refuted the claims, accusing Friedman of lying, adding that she only met him once and he didn’t show her any building, rezoning and development plans. “He only came knocking on my door once and that was it,” alleged a furious Katja.

“I’ve always maintained that we can meet anytime but he refused because he knows what he is doing there is not right. We further maintain that this project was not approved, as I personally to the council and was informed that the project was not approved as there was an objection that was still pending.

“This guy is trying to play us and he is taking the people of Bramley for fools.” She added that these alleged lies need to stop.

Katja said they are still waiting for a town planner from the City to give them a report on the project.

The City also maintains that all processes were followed and even called on Katja to lodge a complaint with the relevant department so that her claims can be investigated. “All the responses that we gave you are our official responses and they’re from the Land Use Management Department,” said Poppy Louw, the City’s Building Development Management Directorate’s spokesperson.

“If she suspects any malpractice or corruption, she needs to register her allegations with the relevant department in the City so that they can be investigated.”
