Herman Mashaba has condemned the senseless killing of an off-duty Metro police officer and has vowed that both the South African Police Service and Metro police will be chasing down every lead to apprehend all those responsible.

Mashaba said, “This latest attack on our Metro officers, is not only an attack on the government but an attack on our efforts to return the rule of law in our City. It is an attack on our residents, who are desperate to feel safe in their homes, communities and streets. We will not let unscrupulous criminals hold us to ransom.”

Though details surrounding the attack are yet to be fully determined, it appears that the officer was walking on foot when he was attacked, disarmed of his service weapon and shot. The shooting occurred between Paul Nel and Claim streets in Hillbrow. One suspect has been arrested.

Two community members assisted in the apprehension of the suspect who fled into what is believed to be a hijacked building.

The community members assisted the police by pointing out the suspect’s hiding place in the building. Unfortunately, one of the community members was injured in the process by unsafe glass in the building. Metro police is ensuring that the resident receives medical attention.

The apprehended suspect claims to be from Mpumalanga and alleged that he was assisted by an unknown accomplice in perpetrating the crime. The police are working on verifying the identity of the suspect in custody and his accomplice.

Policing authorities are also hot on the heels of the other suspect who is believed to be in possession of the firearm used in the crime.

Any residents who may have information regarding this attack are urged to please come forward.

Mashaba added that his heartfelt condolences goes out to the friends and family of the fallen officer.
